Parker could see up to 10,000 people for the Lucas Oil Colorado River Challenge soon.
The event will be held in Parker. The Parker Strip has a narrow body of water, the Colorado River and mountain formations on both sides of the river give the event a more manageable race.
It will be held October 14th-15th, 2017
, the Lucas Oil Colorado River Challenge at BlueWater Resort & Casino. Drag boat competitors will number around 110 to 120, according to Drag Boat Racing Series Director Ken Dollar.
On the Lucas Oil website racing is described as “... insanity! How else can you describe a form of racing in which nitro methane Top Fuel machines vaporize the liquid one-quarter mile in just 4.7 seconds at over 250 mph? For racing fans around the country, nothing satisfies their urge for speed and raw horsepower like the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series.”
Parker has been host to established boat races, which were started by the late Marion Beaver, who was a world champion boat racer, in the late 1940s.
Cecil Florence started the Parker Enduro and was a championship racer. Florence had a successful racing career and was cut short when he died at a competition at Firebird Lake outside Phoenix.
The event will be exciting, as Dollar put it, “The race will be set up just like drag racing, side by side competition.”
There are a variety of classes: Crackerbox and K-Boats; Top Fuel Hydro, Pro Modified, Quick Eliminator, Personal Watercraft and Modified Eliminator.
According to published reports the race brings in 8,000 to 10,000 people.
